I'm wondering about costs associated with opening up an online business, such like a social network. What would it cost to have a website built that had the most common features like photo gallary,(uploading your pics), uploading videos, creating a profile, being able to send email back and forth, adding friends, maybe voting on different things and being able to rate them. Ball park figure?

How much would hosting services be? (i guess it all depends on the amount of users?) lets say 10, 000 users.

Are you talking about a social network like facebook or myspace? There is a myspace clone script out there which is around $40 so it does everything you are thinking about doing.

Hosting is cheap, you can find it in many places. I think the owner of this place hosts websites.

So can these clones be tweaked a little bit, to make it more secure and at the same time customize it the way you want it to look? $40 k seems quite a bit. I probably would not start with all the features myspace has.

I believe he meant $40.00 not $40,000. Here is an open source (free) myspace clone:

AROUNDme: An Open Source PHP MySpace Clone | Hiveminds Magazine for web publishers and community builders

Here is a commercial one for $280.00: Online Social Networking Software MySpace clone. Run your own online social networking community just like Friendster and Myspace. Social Networking script

And yes, I would believe that you could customize these as much as you like.

Would someone who is not that familiar with programming be able to put together and build a site with some of those free programs from that site you gave me? I'm willing to put in much time (as I have much time) into it.

I don't see why not. If you get hosting from us (me and sidewinder) I will be willing to help.

It depends what plan you choose! I host my website with them, It's good and very fast!! And yes if you have patience you may be able to edit them they way you need, even if you are not an experienced programmer, but it will require research, time, patience and testing!

I guess it would be cheaper to take a clone and tweak it a little rather then building one from scratch?

Well definitely! If you will start from scratch you will have to be a PHP freak! But if you will edit one, it should be up in a matter of a few days and all you will need is the basic programming skills and how to find the code so you can change it to work your way.
