To Increase Alexa rank, do the visitors need to have the alexa toolbar installed? Or Alexa will track the traffic in some other way?

I've never been sure about how Alexa tracks visitors. I know that getting links to your site will also increase your rating though.

Alexa only collects these records, (hits & page-views) from people who have the Alexa toolbar installed (only available for IE) or when people access your site through a REDIRECT which I will be coming to.

I never like the way alexa ranks your site.
Alexa ranking is determined only by the number of visitors from the alexa toolbar installed computer and there are a lot of countries where even webmasters do not use alexa toolbar.

Wow! I didn't know that was how Alexa tracked things... so that means that Alexa rankings are grossly inaccurate, because I bet less than 5% of Internet users have that toolbar!

Find it from here:
Alexa Developer's Corner - Site Widgets
There are various formats, I always choose the most compact one (the last one, Rank Button)
