I have an idea for a program that is fairly simply, not much more complicated than an address book. Using Excel and VBA, I have been able to get a rough idea of how it would work/look.
I might be willing to pay someone to write it for me, but I don't know what kind of programming experience would be needed, so I don't know who to ask.
I would like the program to run on Windows 98 and up, and maybe down the road, on a Mac. It consists of about 30 fields, with some modest calculations.
When I look for programmers via search engines, I get a ton of web builders, some C++, Perl, etc. I have no clue which of these services can do what I want. As I mentioned, I figured out how to get what I want done with Excel and VBA, so it can't be THAT difficult. I would expect someone with 1-2 years of programming should be able to do it in a few weeks using whatever.
(The problem with MY version is that you need Excel. If I can develop a marketable product, I don't want to limit myself only to customers that have Excel. It should be it's own program.)
Any advice is welcome.
What kind of programming??

I would search for (windows) developers using C#, C++ (MFC would be better than .NET), Delphi or Visual Basic. This would be simple in any of those languages. I'm guessing the bulk of what you would find is C++ or Visual Basic. Also remember, if the person develops it using .NET libraries the user *must* have these installed or it will not work so your application may be limited to who can use it.

I would charge less to write in something like Flex or Coldfusion. In a web application it would be easier to charge, and you wouldn't have to require users to have anything but the internet.
Also, if you use a web application, you can use something like PayPal to record money, and a Microsoft Access document, or simlar products that supports database-like commands.
Webhosting sites charge less than it would take you to create your own standalone product that people would have to buy, and then later install.

Everything in Life can be solved with an 'If/Else' statement.
Life is like one big try/catch statement, nested within a loop.
