I was asked the other day what the first OS was (electronic of course, not the hand and rope things you read about). I had no idea so I did some research and found the answer. Something to think about for all of you computer gurus. If you can't find the answer post here and I'll give it up.

I know in the in the late 60's early 70's Bell Labs started a project called Multix (but their aims were quite high) Years later part of the project was salvaged and hence Unix.
Not sure if thats the first OS or not...

I thought it was OS/360, but I'm not sure too, it could also had been Multics, like Sidewinder was talking about.

Do any of these qualify?
NOTE: OS/360 is from the 60's.
- FORTRAN Monitor System
- General Motors Operating System
- Input Output System (invented for IBM-704)
- SAGE
- SOS
