My friend just built a new computer with some fairly nice specs. He put the motherboard in and then the ram, cpu, video, hard drive and cd-rom. When he powers on the computer all it does is beep. There is no smell of smoke so I don't think it is fried or anything. Anyone know what this means?

something is not connected correctly. that is usually a Hardware issues. Go in, make sure he has all his power sources plugged in right. Maybe check the HD connections.

record the beeps(mentally)
then look up the documentation for his mobo. the beeps correlate to the problem. (i.e., two short beeps might be ram, one short beep might be CPU etc. etc.)

Yup, your motherboard should have the beep count and what they mean. I had one do this because the ram was the wrong kind.
