Found this useful information:-

Linux Founder: Linus Torvalds

Linus Torvalds is generally credited with writing the Linux kernel while a student at the University of Helsinki, Finland. After he released the beta version to his computer science community, he made 90 updates to it as a result of their comments and input and finally released Linux 1.0 in 1994. From the beginning, he made it clear that all code was to be freely distributed.

OS X is a derivative of one of the flavors of BSD (I can't recall if it was based on OpenBSD or FreeBSD). The BSDs are similar to Linux in look & feel, and even run many of the same programs, but are maintained differently.
Programming is a branch of mathematics.

When I read this I expected several people to shout out this answer! IMO, Linus Torvald should be as well known as Bill Gates although I have been a Linux enthusiast since I was 13 or 14.

You can see the similarity when you drop to a shell (is it called that in OS X?). The x manager is Apples own creation though, right?
