You can become a guru yourself if you just do research ..there are thousands of search engines out there. I actually saw that someone posted here a find of over 450 countries and search engines that are used by each..We don't need to hire anyone..we just have to discover what works for us.

If your site is good, you don't need to submit to SEs, it will get indexed naturally. Any SEs that rely totally on submission are bad SEs.

How do you mean it will get indexed? I am not too familiar with how websites get indexed..?

Well I'm no expert but when people visit your site, search engines take notice. It doesn't hurt to submit to search engines and SEO's (in fact in helps), but things like the Yahoo Slurp and GoogleBot will eventually find it when links lead to it. It does take time, though.

You are right, it does take a lot of time. I always assume 6 months minimum and a year or more for good results.

Submitting to SEs is completely unnecessary, I've never done it, and I'm fine. It's a waste of time and/or money.
