I have a new laptop, and it's only 96MB RAM and like 380Mhz processor, but can I use a crossover cable and do a small peer-to-peer with my 256MB RAM and 2.52GHz computer (wow, this slow comp actually sounds fast compared to the other slowey)? Or would it go too slow?

Your computer performance wont impact most on data transfer speed, it almost goes as it is. If you are going to try remote access only there will be some short comes.

It may reduce performance for sure,
But I think you will be able to use both computers at the same time.

256MB must be so slow. My friend actually has 96MB on the computer in his room and it is unusually fast. I mean, it's still slow, but not as slow as you would expect.
