Spam is something that you see a lot of. Is there anything preventing bots from joining the forum?

From what I was told, it has been from a different IP every time. But, hey if you get spammers, you know you're on the right track ;)
Well I know about very very very famous forums that has been up for a long time with 1000s of users ( I was one of them before I joined here ) and as far as I saw there were never spammers around!

Other than having the Text Recognition that you have to confirm by typing in what you see, I don't think so.
Well perhaps you could make a harder Captcha? ( Text Recognition ) and perhaps you could request an email and after registration an automatic email will be sent to the user with a verification/activation link then the user will have to click it to be able to sign in the forums for the 1st time! this will make it harder for bots to enter here because before the could sign in they would have to activate their account! what you think?

You do get an activation link. And i think with the text recognition it should be enough.

It wasn't working when you registered Tcm. The old server would take about 4 days to send out an email so I had to disable it.

Ow i see.. so I'm not going mad. Because I knew that I didn't receive an email! But well never mind now that you have the activation email.

The two most common ways to prevent spam bots are CAPTCHAS and Account Activation. However it todays world of rapidly advancing technology the basic captchas are prooving to be more and more less effective. The strength of the captcha is very important. Of course the captchas that is most hard to read will be most effective against the bots but it will also hinder the ammount of visually impaired people who would join the forum. I know ive seen some captchas that I can barley make out, and of course they are the most effective.
Some other means to combat spammers, rather than prevent them is to not give them what they want. All spammers essentially want the same thing, to promote their website(s). And to do so, they create posts with multiple links, and some, when they create their account, make every field (or all possable fields) a url. All this in effect causes their links to get promoted when a search engine spider crawls the forums or their profile. Some basic things that could be done to prevent that is to require users to meet certian requirements before their profiles become visible. If they are invisible, search engines cant crawl them. Also limit the number of URL's posted per thread. The spam bot earlier posted like 20 links while the average Joe usually will post 1 to 5 links max per post.
Also posts per minute and page loads per second have helped combat spam bots. There are other means like filtering user-in headers and blocking wide ranges of ip address but of course that may cause a non spammer to be mistaken for a spammer.
However the best way to combat spam bots is good moderation. Once they see their posts are getting deleted and their links arnt getting any hits, they will adventually give up.
Im actually in the process of developing a different type of captcha-type-thing that, rather then generates a random string, it generates a random question such as
"What day of the week is it?" or "What shape is this" (with a image of a circle next to the question) but as for the future of spam is only going to get worse unless a new security feature is made or law suits agains ISP's are made. I heard on the news last night that 90% of all email send in november was spam, it is getting rediculus.
