How do I know the alt+key combination for odd symbols like ¶?

You can find these values from the built-in character map of Windows.

Start->Accessories->System Tools->Character Map

The only alt key that I knew was alt 4 2 4, which makes a ¿

nope, only on macs :) Plus then only in a few apps.
