Has anyone ever done this?? What OS is that and how do you even start programming for one of these PDA devices?

J2ME is the OS, I think (Java 2 Micro Edition). Blackberry has a free SDK and Eclipse plugins for developers.

We looked at doing a project on it, but it fell through. So I only got to the looking around stage.

That's a fine stage brackett. I'd like to program for my blackberry but I have no freaking idea.
