I have been reading a lot that controversal topics are a great way to get people to visit your site and talk about it + make comments. Has anyone tried this? What are some topics, I thought of a few:

1) America's war in iraq
2) Prosecuting certain races more than others

Any other ideas?

lol, that's an awfully long way of saying racism. But yes, a good way to get traffic is to make your site controversial.

Yes, I can say from experience that this stuff works! You can get a ton of visitors if your topic gets discussed a lot.

Stay on niche. That's about all I have to say if you want a quality site.

If you're site is related to politics... go for it (and get ready for some flame wars).

Remember that just because your site is controversial doesn't mean it will get visitors. It's as hard to build a controversial site as it is any other. Well, usually.

Gay Marriage
Any type of Political topic these days
Conspiracy theories

Those such would help you also I agree with Kaabi, just cause you have a viewpoint will not increase your traffic. If they wanted to talk about it, what place better then a forum?

And you run the risk of alienating users whose viewpoint differs from the majority so could end up losing users

Still, you would probably gain more users than you would lose, and you might even gain people from the opposite viewpoints... for a variety of reasons.

I know that the "PHP Sucks" thread you created got a lot of attention so I'd say that controversal topics are great for traffic unless they get out of hand.

Which [insert items here] is the best?

Unless you choose something stupid (like...deoderant or brand of socks), that's going to be a controversial topic. :)
