Well to start off with you'll need some good software. I would reccomend Adobe Photoshop, but macromedia fireworks is also good.

Yes, you will need graphics software and then you can base your banner from a template. Search for free banner templates on google and you will come up with several results.

The software suggested are all really good but don't they cost? I think there are free demo version but how do they stack up against the full/paid version?
