Getting a good domain name (with a keyword you want to optimize) is perhaps the most important thing to do if you want to optimize the keyword. If you're domain has the keyword in it, you already have a HUGE advantage over other people trying to promote the word. I've heard of a guy who was trying to promote a keyword, and he had aquired lots of backlinks and all, and that a site that had absolutely nothing on it, but the title was the keyword, was ahead of him. That's how important it is, so if you have the money, try to purchase the domain name that is the keyword itself (although it'd probably be very expensive).

Well, that's true, but usually if you can get a domain name that is the keyword you want to optimize, it already is memorable and brandable.

Domains are important for optimizing a keyword, like if your domain is your keyword, then it already has a huge advantage over other sites. I've seen a guy try to optimize his site for a certain keyword, and he had lots of links, but a site that had NOTHING on it but was the domain name was the first result for the search.

That's a great example of the power of a domain name. I used to wonder why someone would pay thousands of dollars for a domain name, and now I know why.

Yes, now I'm reconsidering my domain name choice. Well, things are still working out, so I guess it's not that bad.

Domain age is also very very important. It often takes 3-6 months after having started your marketing campaign before you can start seeing good rankings and traffic from google. MSN / Windows Live rankings can come much sooner, and slight Yahoo rankings can come alongside MSN within the first few months, but to get great Yahoo rankings it can often take 6-9 months - that's longer than the google sandbox. This is assuming that you're marketing your site well, of course.
What helps tremendously is if you already have an existing online presence - then you can simple support your new projects with good links from your other sites. This way a new site can gain a high proportion of good links against not so good links. By good links I mean inlinks coming from pages which have few other links. By not so good links I mean links coming from links farm style directories which don't benefit the PageRank recipient quite so much.

An aged domain name is worth a lot. One of my sites has been around for over a year and I think that the age alone is helping it a lot. I'm getting traffic from keywords I haven't optimized in months!
