I've never had any problems with my hoster, but I've heard of people who's sites have considerable downtime because of problems with their hoster. I've also heard horror stories about a hoster completely crashing and people losing everything. I have a small site, but I don't know how I would deal with something like that, and I can't even imagine how bad it would be for someone who was actually worked years on a site and was making a lot from it.

I've had some considerable downtime in the past. I used about 10 different hosting companies. My first one was the worst I think. It was down about once a week.
You should take backups of your website at least weekly if not daily.....

I've never done a backup of my site, I think I should. I'd be sad if my website crashed and I couldn't restore it.

I backup my site every month. Perhaps I should do it more often, but I'm just too lazy. Once a month is fine for me.

For me hosting is not something I can leave up to someone new or take a chance on someone trying to make their way in the world. I need a host with an established track record for support, uptime and backups. I use multiple hosts right now and they all meet that criteria.
If I were just playing around, I might take a flyer on a less-known and less-experienced host, but the host is your biggest potential point of failure in you having a succesful site so you can not risk it.

Im with an unknown host but they are awesome. I took a chance on them and they turned out well, been with them for 2 years now and not one single problem the whole time.

I know a guy who is willing to host me for free but I'm scared to go with him. Something could easily go wrong and he doesn't have the features and support my current host has.
