What amount would you consider to be enough to start a website, run it, promote it and keep up with its daily updates? Do you think this take too much money?

If you have your own website, how did you start?

I have a website, it's relatively small, but I have spent a lot of money on it. Domain and hosting cost me like $17 for the first month, and hosting is $10 a month. I've also spent money on directory submissions, link building... well, that's all. Oh yeah, and a programmer, I knew I was missing something! I know I've spent over $100, but I can't pinpoint it exactly.

I think anywhere from $500-1000 is good enough to start a website, run it and promote it.

Hosting: 5-100
Run it? Free if you know how to code
Promote it: Rest of money.

$1000 seems good, per month. That would allow a lot of text ads, banner ads, PPC and more!

You can start a website with $25 dollars.

The amount of money spent is just a way to speed up the process, usually.

I know I don't spend a lot of money when I start it, maybe I should, but it helps me to correct minor bugs and stuff like that.

You can start a website with almost nothing.

My first "real" website was built by me and I'm no webprogrammer.

phpBB and notepad for the win ;)

So I'm seeing $500-$1000, and $1000 per month. I disagree highly. It's easy once you get a PR. First you build some links by putting your site in forum signatures and asking friend's to link to you from their site. Then, after getting a PR, link exchange with a lot of people, and watch the SEO roll in.

this is going to sound funny but I started my website with $0.

I got a domain, hosting, forum software, and got my site running for no cost at all.

How did I do it? Easy, well actually it wasnt. I got the domain in a contest, i won, therefore, I got my free domain. Hosting, someone is sponsoring my project, i do not have to pay for hosting either. Forum software? I am using vBulletin (owned licence) which costs $160 USD but I got it for free, someone saw my site and he loved it, therefore, he donated the vBulletin software to the cause. Running the site has also been free because I made it myself, no need to pay someone to do the job i already know how to do.

Sounds good eh? :)

With the right marketing, there is no need for a high budget.

If your site is interesting and original, and it offers something for the user word will get round eventually!

I spend zilch on marketing apart from building PR.

Wow MrDiaz you are so lucky, you have a successful site and you haven't even spent anything on building it or promoting it! It must be great if someone donated a $160 piece of software.
