just out of curiosity, how much do you think it would take to take a website from nothing to one of the top 1000? I mean, something like download.com or google.com.

With a serious marketing campaign I reckon it could be down in as little as 12 months - with enough investment you could quite easily create a site that was known, and visited by many people.
However, without money it would probably take a good few years to get established - the top 1000 sites are all unique, been around for a while, have interesting content and are good in what they do.

At first I thought you meant the top 1000 results in Google (for a certain keyword), and then Dan said as little as 12 months, and I'm thinking "What?" but I reread it and now I understand. You would definately need A LOT of links coming to you, as well as an extremely good design and lots of advertising.
