How often should you update your site to keep it SE friendly and to stay near the top of the rankings?

Once per day, once per week?
What is the ideal time?

There is no real timescale for static content, although the more you update your site the better really in terms of SE friendliness. If a googlebot visits your site every few days and sees a new article then obviously you will rank better. You will have more articles listed in the search engine so that will pull in more visitors, increasing your sites SEO.

Remember, Content is king!

If you do not update your site that often, consider adding "dynamic content" to the main page, a simple way of doing this is using RSS feeds to add news headlines/stories related to your sites niche to the sites main page.

Agreed 100%! Content will do you better than anything in marketing. Original Content, not content that is copied.

I guess the answer to your question is update as often as possible!

I add original content usually every day. Not much, but it's still an update.

Ideally everyday.

Forum:

Forum allows you to keep adding new content. It's a collaborative environment, so it's not that difficult to keep adding new content everyday. Downside is this; it appears that search engines do not like forums very much. It's advisable that you study how to optimize forums and you do it right.

Blog:

Blog software like Word Press allows you to schedule posting. This makes your life so much easier, and it makes it relatively easy to add content everyday.
Discount travel books, online degree program reference guide,
best health store, talk about personal finance, chat about movies,
politics, politics, politics and a place to hang out for webmasters.

Well I don't have a blog, when I update content I have to do it through the cPanel or an FTP client (although I don't use that much). I try to update regularly though.

Simply, the more you add content, the better. Whenever you have the opportunity to add something, add it!

I've seen sites succeed simply by having the RSS feeds which continually update their site. It works, but I don't think it should, because that's making duplicate content.

I always have the opportunity to update my site, I could do it everyday, but sometimes I'm just too lazy to go into cPanel.

Great thread and great responses.
I will be conducting experiments to see which updating pattern works best!
