Do you think its wise to use many subdomains for various topics?
Or to create seperate domains altogether?

I would rather create a new domain for each topic but this can cost alot.
Which method is best?

I've seen some really good subdomain websites rank high and receive a lot of visitors but on the other hand I am like you. I'd rather create a new domain per website. I'm not sure if search engines penalise for this.

I have often thought about purchasing a really random generic short domain name and having subdomains for sites to save on cost.

However, a domain costs $8 from godaddy and if you have your own hosting package / server the costs are negligable really, and I would of thought the financial gains of a .com website would outweigh the small saving on the domain because of trust from users, SEO and increased business. I for one wouldn't exchange links with a subdomain no matter how good the site was - it just looks lazy!

I like using subdomains to link a lot of related sites together. It can turn into a massive web site getting thousands of uniques a day and be worth a lot more should you sell it

I'd go with the subdomains, because subdomains (I think) are considered different websites by search engines, so it really doesn't matter. I guess the only downside is it's more characters for people to type.

Subdomains are as good as regular domains except that they're harder to remember. Regular domains have no advantage over subdomains in terms of SEO.

Thinking from a financial point of view, it is better to create subdomains because that saves money. When you create a new domain, you have to of course purchase it and then pay for hosting, that is, unless your hosting plan lets you host more than one site.

I might start making a lot of subdomains, because I have some new site ideas but I definately don't want to buy more domains. I'm very cheap.

But the only thing is if that site gets banned then so do all your subdomain sites!
I prefer to keep them seperate i think in case something happens.

I never thought about that, it would be bad. What do you mean by banned? AdSense? Because if you're banned from AdSense you're banned from all your sites. Do you mean if Google bans you from their search engine? That rarely happens.

It's really hard to get banned from Google, you have to do LOTS of things wrong for them to actually remove you. I wouldn't worry about it.
