The other post about P2P got me thinking about Bittorrent. I think that Bittorrent would be a great way to distribute your software and reduce your bandwidth usage. I know that WoW updater uses Bittorrent but can takes hours to download even a small update.

Has anyone here used it? Can a server be setup on Linux that always hosts your files 24x7?

I have thought about doing this in the past but most shareware/download sites link directly to your download. Running a bittorrent client all the time on the server would bog down the resources and most downloads wouldn't be from bittorrent. I couldn't justify using the resources for bandwidth. Bandwidth is too cheap. The user would also have to have a bittorrent client as well.

Yes, there is a client that can run on linux but I do not know of a background client. I am sure there is one though. You could always execute the bittorrent client and add a & after the command. This will put the client in the background.......

Perhaps larger files would be more cost effective, I am thinking along the lines of linux distros here - although I doubt the coders on here are as large as that!

Bittorent can be fiddly to setup, for small files I would reccomend FTP as it makes your software more accessible to more people - which is what you want!
