1)Search Engine Optimization - has to be a big part of your strategy.

2)Directory listings - is a part of search engine optimization, but does generate quite a bit of traffic.

3)Links from other web site - again, is a part of search engine optimization, but does generate quite a few visitors.

4)Pay per click advertising - check out Google Adwords and Overture (and MSN when they start their own pay per click shortly)

5)Online PR - helps search engine optimization and helps awareness.

6)Offline PR - we had huge success when our site was mentioned on a national TV show.

7)Viral/Link baiting - have great free stuff on your site so your visitors tell others about your site.

8)Write & distribute articles - great for establishing yourself as a good writer and your site as one the reader might like to visit.

9)Mention your web site on all promotional literature - this includes letterhead, business cards, signage, cars, etc.

10)Start an email newsletter - create quality content that leads the reader back to your web site.

Nice post!

I'm better at numbers 2, 3 and 4 and not so good at the rest. I should really work on offline PR and SEO more though.

Any advice? Do you have know a good list of directories to submit to?

My site has been submitted to a lot of directories, but since the PR update hasn't happen I don't know how it's affected me. Directories aren't really that good for increasing traffic though, it's an SEO thing.

One thing I would do is add your site to the stumbleupon directory, I've added it 15 minutes ago and have seen my traffic shoot up already

Ravs2k6, can you tell us what you recommend for all 10 of those ways? I don't know any good ones, since I am new with websites and stuff, and I really need active members for my forum.

Thanks

Ravs2k6 hasn't been active in a while (at least I haven't seen him). I can give you what I would do with these 10 if you like.

For forum promotion, you might want to PM Jordan - as he runs and promotes this forum (which has grown fast in a short time).

How do you add your site to stumbleupon? I'm on the site but I can't find any way to add my site, it seems like it would help traffic a lot.

I thought users add your site to stumbleupon?
Ie they find your site then add it, isnt that how it works?
