Has anyone ever bought advertisement from smaller shareware sites and had success? I'd like to buy some ad space and see what happens on the cheaper shareware download sites.

Who?
What? (Banner/Text/Main Page)
Increase downloads?
Cost?
ROI?

I've bought text links before but not on shareware sites.

ROI: $0

Of course it wasn't targeted to increase downloads but to increase PR rating for google.com. It wasn't a link farm either - I think those will drop your PR rating.
