I think the best way to promote other than submitting to google + directories is to get links to your website. This not only improves your PR rating for google but also improves the amount of visits you receive.
Here are some reciprocal link services:

Target sites similar to your own.

Articles, directories, threads on forums, they all add to your site's promotion.
I find it very interesting to see that SEO has become such a "big business", where would we be without google :)

Agreed about google. It seems that MSN Search has become very good recently too. They will crawl your site faster and the search results seem to be more relevant than googles.

Well it seems that microsoft is going to launch a whole new strategie and an enormous marketing compain when the launch there "live" products. MSN will then be renewed and more advanced then now so yes indeed msn is worth putting some effort into just as yahoo is and some others.

Its better to find free web directories cause it saves lots of time as it doesnt need you to edit some site or page before submitting and ur submission time reduces.

I hope more people start using MSN, because I rank well with them! Of course, I would never use MSN... just too used to Google.

Link exchanges are great, but directories are a great way to get one-way links. Also, buying links is another good way to get exclusive backlinks.

Yeah with reciprocal directories you have to go on your website, add the link, and then submit. That takes at least 4 minutes (for me because I use cPanel), or maybe less if you have an FTP client. That's why I think free is the best, because it saves time, web space, and of course money.

I've never used an FTP client before, how do you get one? I use cPanel and I've clicked "FTP" before but I don't see anything to do there. I just won't worry about it.
