The express editions of Visual Studio 2005 are free!
These editions are just basic components such as:
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition
Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
Visual C# 2005 Express Edition
Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition
Visual J# 2005 Express Edition
Here is where to get them: http://msdn.microsof...studio/express/
Here is a comparison between these express editions and the complete Visual Studio.

Straight from the MS site... http://msdn.microsof...lt.aspx#pricing
11. You said “free for one year†— what does that mean, exactly? Will you be charging for this later?
We originally announced pricing of Visual Studio Express at US$49. We are now offering Visual Studio Express for free, as a limited-in-time promotional offer, until November 6, 2006. Note that we are also offering SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as a free download, and that this offer is not limited to the same promotional pricing period as Visual Studio Express.

You didn't read far enough down:
12. Do customers who acquire the Visual Studio Express products during the free promotional pricing period have to pay after the first year if they want to continue to use them?
No, as long as you download Visual Studio Express on or before November 7th 2006, you will not have to pay for it.

For those that are still following, the Express editions were announced to be permanently free on 4.19.06 (which makes the fact that Amazon is still selling the thing for $90 all the more amusing). See the updated FAQ for the official word.

That is great news! Is there anyway to get more templates into the express editions? I'd like to have the installer that the studio version has.
I could not find the software on amazon.com for $90. Post a link to it?

I'm not sure about getting more project types/items into the Express editions - but I suspect it's very similar to these instructions for VS2005.
Looking back at the link I gave for the Amazon product page (for VB Express), it seems that Amazon isn't directly selling it - but it's through their marketplace. My apologies to Amazon, I guess. Either way, Visual Basic Express is listed on Amazon for $90, and Visual Web Developer Express for $80. To be fair, I think the boxed versions contain a couple of niceties (including a beginner's book, and probably some posters) that the downloads don't give you. I couldn't find Sql Server 2005 Express, Visual C# Express, or Visual C++ Express.
