    light speed internet

"THE internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds. "

Sounds interesting. Most other countries use 100 Mbit/s connections, and here we are languishing around at 0.001 Kb/s. It's a shame, really, although Virgin has upgraded its service to fibre-optic cables, so it should help a little.

Seems like a cool idea. Here the fastest internet you can get is 10Mbit, but it's quite expensive! But for businesses you can order custom plans.. but those will be sky high.

The ISP called "Be" offers 24 Mbit/s. If you're in the catchment area you can get about 19Mbit/s.

This isn't that impressive to me. Fiber Optic technology has been around for a long time but is very costly. The current internet even uses it in some instances. If there was a second internet to spawn entirely from fiber optic technology I bet that the telecommunications companies would still deliver it to us in the same way (DSL, Cable, ISDN, Dial-up) and we would never feel the effects of it.

For the most part, although the long distance lines and internal components (which, even without updating the old phone lines would increase speed 10 fold, thanks to replacing the old 533mhz phone-style switches they still use,) it would take decades to rebuild the existing infastructure to use fiber optics.

Then the government should get started right away, eh?

So you think that the PSTN will be fully fiber optic?

    Re: light speed internet

I know it will be eventually. Theres only so many clever tricks they can do to keep increasing capacity on the existing lines. Eventually they will have to go over to fiber optics.

In my dream world, I don't see a wire being used at all for things like crossing the ocean.

Particle entanglement is the way to go. We've been able to create paired particles that, when a state change is induced in one, regardless of distance, the other one will also change. Imagine a simple system of 0's and 1's, or different quantum states, instantly sending signals back in forth, operating at the speed of existence.

Personally, I didn't understand your concept in your dream world. Except for the 0's and 1's, and that everything is wireless?
