With TCP, the loss of packets is not uncommon, especially with slow / low bandwidth internet connections. The loss of packets [data] thus result in a corrupt file. Although there are many more reasons files can corrupt, I would say, this is the most probable.

It may be that you just had a unreliable connection at the time you were downloading.

I'd download your distro using BT. It performs checksums across the whole body of the download and only needs to replace individual segments if they fail their checksum.
Another option is downloading the MD5 checksum from the site and running that against the iso. It won't correct the problem but at least you know if the download failed before you burn it to a disc and try to install it. TBH I find TCP to be generally reliable, I rarely get a bad download but it does happen on occassion (once a year perhaps, TCP is supposed to be a reliable service over an unreliable IP service). I've certainly never had 3 in a row. Are you sure it's the file that's corrupted and it's not your CD-R messing things up? |

Hello, I am having the exact same problem as the author of this thread is having.
Whenever I download a file from serious File Hosts like Rapidshare/Megaupload or even game demo's from Game Spot my files get corrupted and I have to re-download them several times until they are right. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel C2D E6400 Video Card: Nvidia Geforce 8800GT Motherboard: Intel DG965SS RAM: 2x Supertalent 1GB DDR2 667Mhz Tried using download managers like FlashGet and Internet Download Manager and the downloads keep getting corrupt. I'm not using any type of proxies, always connected directly to my internet connection. Have also tried downloading the files directly from FireFox's inboard downloader and Internet Explorer's, and get the same results. I've tried looking for the Nvidia ActiveShield thing, or whatever it is called, but it seems that the Intel Motherboards don't have that. By the way, I'm connecting to the internet through an ethernet cable to my Motherboard's inboard ethernet thing. However, this problem doesn't only happen to my computer, It also happens to my brother's and it has fairly similar specs to mine just that he has a different Intel Motherboard type, RAM brand/Mhz, and video card. I have tried disabling my Windows Firewall to see if the problem goes away, yet it doesn't. Have also tried disabling my Anti-Virus, which is Avast! Professional 4.7 (I forgot the number of the version, its the latest one.), yet no good results. The same things that my computer and my brother share are the Nvidia Video Card drivers, Antivirus and Operative System (Which is Windows XP.). Talking about OS, well I've also tried formatting my PC and installing Windows Vista Ultimate and then tried downloading stuff and same results, corrupted downloads. The only solution I've found to this problem is to re-download the part/file (depends if what I'm downloading is a RAR or EXE) several times until I get it right. Or just downloading stuff from BitTorrents. I really need help on this matter, I'm getting very frustrated (this has been happening to me for quite a few months already.) and I don't know what to do. Thank you in advance, ~ Wammie. |
