I really wanted to get into writing apps for iPhone, but I was wondering if I needed an iPhone. I checked their website and it turns out you don't need an iPhone, you need to have a mac! An intel mac with Leopard 10.7.x or later, to download the iPhone SDK.
I've also read that after that they charge you $100 for every application you send them to test it out before putting it on their online store. Is this true?
I'm considering checking out blackberry stuff but I'm guessing most of the apps would have to be business stream.
Overall, I wish Apple wouldn't try so hard to rip me off.

You can develop Windows mobile apps for free using Visual Studio express editions.

Anyone can download the iPhone SDK which you will require to make the apps. The language of choice is Objective C, but I have seen many apps created in other languages. Also what you would of read about with the $100 and Mac with Leopard is a special application that Apple has created to help program iPhone/iPod Touch apps.
I can't remember what it's called but it is EXTREMELY helpful if you wish to get serious but it still costs a lot. You can also test the app on an iPhone screen that they have programmed into the application. You click test code and it will open an iPhone screen and it will allow you to do whatever you would do if you already had the phone.

Sorry if I don't post as often as I did, I'll try to get here as much as possible! I'm working my bum off to get this scholarship and other stuff!
He is saying that you need Mac hardware in order to use the SDK since the SDK only runs on Macintosh and Leopard at that. So basically, in order to develop for the Mac you either:
A) Purchase $1,000+ hardware
OR
B) Create a Hacintosh
What's a Hacintosh?

It's OS X installed on non-Mac hardware.
Oh OK, I never knew that was possible.

Downloading the SDK is free of charge and comes with some really cool stuff. You get the Xcode IDE, an iPhone simulator, an Interface Builder, etc. The 100$ charge is to become an app developer. Once you pay this 100 dollars you can develop your apps and send them in to Apple for approval. If the apps are approved then you may put them into the app store. If you would just like to write apps and test them on the iPhone simulator, you can do this for free. Once you pay the hundred bucks you can plug in your iPod and test your apps directly.
Thanks for that Schafer5! I am going to go and download the SDK now hehe
