It all depends on what you are looking to code!

In terms of web based programming, MYSQL, PHP, HTML, xHTML, CSS can be learned fairly easily through the tweaking of existing applications and will stand you in good stead for whatever you want to create.

In terms of "application programming" I would suggest C / C++ yes they are complicated, and coding in VB may be easier initially, to me it makes sense to learn the most powerful language first, but then that is just me!

Please do give more information, and I will do my best to help you!

Well, I know HTML sort of. I'd like to learn some kind of application programming just to do as a hobby. Is C++ the way to go then?

I would recommend it - yes.

However, if this is just a hobby decide on what you would like to create - if it is simple things, then perhaps VBASIC would be the way to go.

Personally, if you are going to invest the time I would learn C++

I was going to say if you're just going to create simple apps you should go with Visual Basic, it's a little more easy to learn. But if you want to learn a language for the long-term and that can be put to a greater use, C++ is your language.
