I have been using Photoshop for ages, and have been working with it all day today, and have never had a problem before.
But one image would not let me add a new layer. It had a black padlock. So I opened a new document and that too had a black padlock and wouldn't let me add layers.
Now every new doc is locked and won't let me do anything.
Have I clicked something I shouldn't have?
I've been working with white padlocked docs all day and they have been ok.
Thanks
There should be a padlock check box below the opacity menu in your layers pallet.
Thank you - yes there is, but all three options are grayed out, they cannot be clicked.
Why are totally new documents already padlocked (that can't be unlocked)?
Completely stumped!
Can you take a screen shot of a new document that is locked and attach it?
Thanks John
Sure

Try Layer -> New -> Layer from Background
Just deleted the Preferences file after reading this page:
adobeforums. com/webx/.ef4a07f
I had to search for the file on my hard drive as no other way worked. I also had to reboot and although all images appeared to not have changed (still a black padlock) I was now able to add a new layer from the menu and the padlock changed to white.
This might help others with the same problem.
Thanks for your help John.
