I was searching around for a decent PHP IDE, and noticed the Vs.Php addon for Visual Studio 2005. I figured that this would make a decent IDE, and proceeded to download and install the addon.
The first problem came when I attempted to install Vs.Php. It would get to around 90% done, then it did nothing for a couple hours, and used up 100% of the CPU. After this, I canceled the installation, and attempted to start up Visual Studio. It sat at the splash screen for about 20 minutes using up 100% CPU. It also did not show the usual plethora of installed products.
I naturally assumed that the addon had broken Visual Studio, and then attempted to uninstall the addon. Despite the fact that I'd canceled installation, it showed up in the Add/Remove Programs list. It did not uninstall very well either, and I ended up killing the process with Task Manager.
After this failed uninstallation, I tried to start up Visual Studio again, with the same results as before. Since by now, I was getting more than slightly pissed at the whole thing, I decided to just uninstall Visual Studio and start over from scratch.
Now, Visual Studio didn't want to uninstall either (I waited over an hour for it to get done, and it hadn't moved at all during that hour), so I manually deleted the folders (they're in the Recycle Bin, so I can recover them), and ran CCleaner to get rid of the registry entries that were made (I also backed up these changes, so I can get back to the pre-uninstallation state if necessary).
The last thing I did was to try reinstalling Visual Studio. So far, The setup program has been running for a half-hour at 100% CPU without showing any windows. I'm not exactly sure where to go from here. I'm certain that completely reinstalling the OS would work, but that is a very drastic step that I really don't want to take.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, (and thanks for actually reading through all of this)

Wow, that addon really screwed you over. I couldn't find any kind of support for this either but I did find 872904.
What is the URL to the add-on and I will see if I can replicated it on a computer I have sitting here (I'm going to format it soon anyway).
Thanks for the article, but I'm not getting the error - it's just not installing at all. I will try it though, and see if it helps.I don't have the .NET Framework 1.0 installed, but I do have the folder they say to delete.
UPDATE: It didn't work.
Here's what I downloaded:

I'll see if I can replicate the problem as well. Currently, all I have is Express Edition though so it may actually work or not install at all for me.
Addons don't install in Express Edition, so it's doubtful that you'll be able to replicate the problem.
Ahh, well, I've ordered a copy of PRO so I should have it next week sometime. I'll give it a try then on a "spare" computer.
Please do, I'd like to know if that was a fluke, or if it really is a broken addon.
I've since just gone and reinstalled Windows, so everything it now working just fine.![]()
Wow, that is extreme! Have you emailed the creator of the addon?
I'll give it a try on Monday. As of right now I can't get PRO to install either. It has been sitting on:
Executing Action: Remove TempHxDs
for about 30 minutes.
