Tend to find having a busy background distracts the eyes from the main content, try making it plain? If thats the background you're intending to use.

Also if you have trouble picking colour schemes I use the Dulux paint colour range and advice about choosing colours to help me sometimes.

Helps to get an idea of what colours work well together even if they're meant for rooms and not the web.
