I've never really thought about what would go into making a search engine. Devshed has an article about creating search engines but I figure that it must be hard, but I don't really know much about how search engines work, so I have no idea what would be required.

You'd a powerful computer to act as a server. It would need to be on 24/7 in order for everyone to be able to access it, with a big hard disk for storing website indexes.
A huge bandwidth for out/in going traffic, maybe? Who cares? No search engine is ever going to amount to anything like Goooooooooooooogle and Yahooooooooooooooo, so don't even bother.

Well yeah you would need a really powerful computer and a huge hard drive, it would be really expensive and with the popularity of google and yahoo it would more than likely not take off, so it's not really worth trying.

Well yeah, it is interesting to see what work would go into making one but I have no idea what you would need to make a search engine.

Some really good programmers probably, if I'm correct google uses python for the most part but I'm not sure.

As others said, you would need huge servers to store information, incredible amounts of bandwidth, and an algorithm to properly find and rank websites. Or, you could just use the Google Custom Search function.

Nope, it's not like having your own search engine cause it is using googles search engine but it would be cool to try to make a search engine but I don't have the skill or the resources to try.
