Re: Work required to host a Search Engine

to build a search engine you would need to make a web crawler I think it would work best in PERL though i belive php can make one as well. Basicly the crawler will go through a list of links you have said up, then it will branch off to the links on those pages and continue the process on and on. You would then need to come up with a way so that it only returns sites that seem to be relavent (still working that one out.) you would need a server dedicated to it, I would sugest host gator for hosting it. it has 95% up time and for $12 a mounth you can get unlimited ban width and more storage then you will need for a verry long time.

Edit: and it would be posible to get up to yahoo and google rank but it would be a lot of work. You would need to offer every thing they do and more. people would use your engine then (asuming it is close in how good it is to the others) because people like conveniance every thing in one site would make me go to it at any rate

Hmm, for a search engine I think it's best having your own servers like CC. Shared hosting is definitely NOT the way to go in my opinion

yes, but if your money is limited or you are not expecting to get more then say 1,000 users in a givin day then shared hosting would work. It would acualy be best, that way with it beeing a "black box" when you see your engine will be popular you can then change to dedicated or if it flops then you din't waste a lot of time and money for a dedicated server

Actually it requires a strong algorithm and an even stronger will and the stronger coding skills. Google started from a backdoor garage!

And there is no harm in giving it a try in this dynamic world!

It would be fun to try to create a small functional search engine though but yeah it would require a lot of good coding skills.

I didn't know that Google started in a garage, that's really cool.

You mean you have not seen the famous video of "google behind the scenes"!
It was released somwhere around 2006..if i remember correctly.

Covers the whole google story. Also see "google in 60 mins".

After seeing it, you gotta respect that company friend.

I'll look up those videos when I'm actually allowed using the internet a lot more again.

Yeah the garage projects can be really great. I don't think it would be worth trying to make a search engine though. Theres a lot of good search engines that have all the features that anybody would need.
