programming a search engine

Hi I am the new guy. Interested in how much programming goes into creating a search engine. Hypothetically, if I wanted to produce my own search engine about how much money would I need?

The amount of money needed would depend on the tools you wanted to use to code your search engine, and how cheaply you can get server space and hardware. You are probably talking about a LOT of money if you want to compete with Google/Yahoo/Bing (as in millions).

You don't need to have millions or billions to build a search engine or compete with Google or any other search engines. The value or how much popularity a specific product would gain, can not be defined by anyone. Google or Yahoo didn't have millions of visitors or users right from the first day. No doubt, you will need to invest for the applications, tools and servers. If the search engine designed by you is excellent and if its market in a proper way then anything can happen.
