Ya, why worry about garbage collection, pointers, memory allocation, or any of that junk when you are learning the basics? It makes it all much more confusing when your new.

You can do all the basics in Java just fine, and there is so much less to worry about. (I define the basics as the obvious extreme basics, learning object orientation, basic data structures, recursion, abstract data types, etc...All of that is more than enough to provide a very strong foundation to programming education)

Lol, you gotta learn how to drive a car and what all the parts do and how they work before you can get under the hood and start really messing around.

Of course one must move on to C(++) later, but I don't really think it is a good first-time language

C# or Java aren't much different in syntax, either. A verbose language like Delphi could be a good introduction, as it is easy to grasp the syntax.

Or Perl. Or shell scripting. Both are very easy to learn, I did when I was 8 or 9.

You mines well just start with C when you are first starting.

It will keep you from forming any myths about programming and it shows you how a compiler should operate.

Yeah, but it will make some things quite hard and confusing for a first-time programmer.. Better start of with something easier to get the concepts. Myths get busted. It's just fine to learn C later and say: "Wow, so that's why [something] work in [insert high-level language]!" Of course, with some nice books/tutorials, C can be learned.. But it will be confusing, I think, for a complete n00b..
