Personally, I'd say the best project to do for php is a content management system!

You could also try to find various sites that you like on the internet and duplicate them.

How about a password protected online journal with options to change the password and add/delete/modify content? You can use md5() encryption for the password...or something else equivalent. This sounds like fun, and it can't be too hard, can it? Enjoy!

I've been thinking about doing a "mobile" version of vBulletin module. Maybe something like this would interest you?

Anything where users of your site can post their own content is likely to get traffic. You have to come up with an idea of what they can post that is interesting and new.
Message boards have been around for ages, as have guestbooks. Social bookmarking is popular now but has already been established. Users creating their own webpages went hideously wrong with myspace but is getting back on track with squidoo (they recently tightnened their security against spammers).

And you have the security problems: if people are posting their own stuff onto your site, how do you stop them abusing the system (with spam and phising, for example).

Hope that gives you some ideas to think about.

I suggest to you to try some DOM parsing with PHP. You can remotely download some HTML page/data, reparse it (grab only what you need) and then send back to user's browser. You can use some AJAX techniques with it too.

Anyway happy coding. There's always a lot of things to do. Just dip in !

A back-link manager. One that tells you who is linking back to you and when it is removed.
