URL breakdown with PHP? Possible?

Is it possible to breakdown a URL with PHP? then take a part of it, confront it with an SQL db etc...?

Let's say I have www.finditglobally.com/international/ can I break the /international and save it as a var or something?

If that doesn't work, you could always use regex.

Well now I have done what I wanted actually.. and have SEF links so this method won't work correctly I think, and this won't work now.

I didn't use htaccess to breakdown the URL.. I used htaccess to achieve what I wanted.. but the end result is nearly the same.. actually with htaccess is better.
