I used the PHP Designer IDE - both the free version and the non-free version - but to me it just doesn't compare to Dreamweaver. And if I were to get a free PHP IDE it would have to be Eclipse PDT [developed by Zend/IBM]. I've used two Eclipse products [for Java and Flex] and they are just awesome - wouldn't expect much less from the PDT.

Default Textpad

I prefer Textpad in Windows, and KDevelop for linux. It has tabbing, but not project management. That's where subversion comes in!

The great thing about textpad is that you can map Toolbar commands to external programs to do whatever you need to. For instance, back in my school days I had a keyboard shortcut to lookup the current word in the online java or php manual.

It also does regex search/replace, spell checking, macros. Oh and it's free.

Unfortunately, you have to dowload a syntax file for correct php highlighting.

I think that good IDE for php must have full scale debug functions to check each line of code in action, like visual studio allow it. And good php debugger have only Zend studio as far as I know.
Although there exists some free php debugger, but it is still far away from Zend one and on top of it exists few commercial php ide programs using free version, so better is just use Zend IDE with Zend php debugger.

Default Don't like Eclipse

Hi,

well, I don't like Eclipse much I tried it, but it has a few strange editor-'malfunctions'. for instance: no virtual whitespace:

pppppppppppppppppp2ppppppppp
d
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee2

If I want to walk from 2 to 2 the cursor will jump back to d.... I really hate that :-))
