Basic wasn't useless in it's day. I learned how to code and program writing theory on Basic.
I can't think of 1 program that was worth buying that came from basic. The code was **** and filled with gotos.
I'm not disagreeing with you but the usefulness of a language doesn't just come from hat has been made directly from it. It also includes the help it has given newbies as well as the ease of it to convey technical programing theories and terms. For instance, I wouldn't have known the difference between a for loop and a do...while loop with out it. My dad (my instructor) told me and tried to break it down and explain verbally but I wasn't getting it so he turned to the only language we had available at the time: Basic. With the hands on visual and actually working in the environment I was able to learn.
All that said, this is totally not the right forum to be discussing an old and out dated programming language. I vote this thread be locked and stashed.
Well... it didn't get locked and stashed lol. Looks like dude never came back to say why he hated PHP.
I'm reading a book about building database driven sites with PHP and MySQL and every night by the end of the night, I hate PHP. But it only comes after about an hour of loving it until I hit a road block. I close the book out, close all the windows and go to bed. The next day, I love PHP again.
He must have still been on day 1.

I would hate to use a book to learn my first language (which I think you are?) it would be annoying and tedious, I have learned from books now but I usually just played around with it for a long time until I got the hang of it all.
sdavis2702 already owns 2 wesites lol, learning by yourself without books can be fun and fast. i think the advantages i get from books are tricks and awesome tips
yo homie i heard you like one-line codes so i put a one line code that evals a decrypted one line code that prints "i love one line codes"

Yes books are good once you know what your doing IMO there are TONS of functions you will use on a regular basis that you will miss learning from the PHP website.
yea like amrosama said, I already own a few sites. I know HTML, CSS and some Javascript and I'm currently working on a CIS degree... so I've got the logic down already. I'm also in Iraq so with my online schooling, my Soldiers and maintaining my websites with a HORRIBLE internet connection, reading this book at my own pace is my best bet. However, I don't spend most of my time in the book (which goes in line with what you're saying). I snatch a few nuggets from the book and run out on my own to play around. Many times now, I've gone to read the book and realized that I had already been doing what the book was now trying to teach me lol. I just read the book for the WHY... learning the HOW comes in all sorts of ways.... mainly by screwing around.
