Yeah you can use them offline which is kind of pointless, and I don't really get how that works either.

I think that you can edit them offline, and then when you get back online they will sync and get uploaded online...

Well, you can always export it to normal xls, work on it and the upload them again once you have an internet connection...

Google Docs Offline will give you access to your documents when there is no internet connection.

This feature will download your docs onto this computer. Please make sure you are not using a public or shared computer.

You will need Google Gears for offline access, and the installer will restart your browser.

When you click to go offline, it has you download google gears which downloads the files to your computer and I guess re-uploads them when you go online.

I guess it's the software that google docs uses to synchronize your files to your computer so you can access them offline.
