Interesting move. Now if Microsoft would help the Mono project directly, it might make .NET truly cross-platform and attractive. Then Microsoft would be able to compete for the best development tools, instead of on the basis of vendor lock-in.
It seems like many Linux users would hate any MS assistance or intrusion into the OS. I'm all for MS helping the Mono project.

There is a difference between allowing a specification to be used, and helping make a specification a reality on a particular platform.
