Is buying thousands of one way text links back to your site a good way to raise your ranking in Google? I'm not interested in PR since it does nothing.

If you want to sell text links, you really do need to care about PR, and buying thousands would help you, but you have to do it gradually.

Why do I need to do it gradually? Does Google penalize for this?

If they all have the same anchor text and same description then there is a possibility they will notice something is up.

But I do not think 1000 links will do harm mate because links are from different domains and pages, I have seen people buying them like this, Why not try using some similar Anchor texts, like 10anchr*100 links perhaps.

You need to use similar anchor texts if you want to get good results in the SEs.
