I feel the opposite. I hate the windowless state of it.

(and as well as based on OPENSTEP)
    Check out the first reply.

    Here it is again:

Yes, Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD/Unix. From the official Apple Site:

Leopard is an Open Brand UNIX 03 Registered Product, conforming to the SUSv3 and POSIX 1003.1 specifications for the C API, Shell Utilities, and Threads. Since Leopard can compile and run all your existing UNIX code, you can deploy it in environments that demand full conformance — complete with hooks to maintain compatibility with existing software.

Re: is mac really based of unix?

Hmm Just found the correct reference to it
Unlike the earlier Macintosh operating system, Mac OS X is a Unix-based operating system[11] built on technology developed at NeXT from the second half of the 1980s until early 1997, when Apple purchased the company.[12]
So since Mac 10.00 (that's OS X) it is re-written based on Unix and the foundation of OPENSTEP the NeXT developed.

I was wondering because Apple does business with Microsoft since its foundation.

I think Bill Gates owns some large portion of stocks in Apple and bailed them out a couple of years ago, but I don't think they do other business, do they? The MS Office Suite for Mac really sucks, IMO.

Nah Jordan. They did business since both were found back in the 70s. I remembered it was Jobs asked Bill Gates to write BASIC. I wondered and I thought MS used UNIX since the beginning. I was surprised after all these years, it wasn't until some years ago they put out this OS X base on Unix and OPENSTEP.

Yes, Mac OS X based on the BSDs. I think it runs on the Mach kernel. You can access the Unix command line by going to Hard Drive --> Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal.

On the other hand, IE for Mac OS is way better than IE for Windows, ironically. The Windows version renders CSS all wrong.

Re: is mac really based of unix?

(I don't know how many times I've answered this same question)

Originally, Apple was going to base OS X on BeOS. However, Be tried holding out for more money and Apple went with Steve Jobs NeXt operating system. They slowly coaxed Mach and BSD together (which introduced many security holes, as the BSD subsystem has permissions the Mach doesn't, and vice-versa (one of these is reading and writing process memory (I made a cheat engine awhile ago :3))).

The Mac OS X version of IE is completely different from the windows version. Its a from-scratch rewrite that uses a different layout engine, Tasman, designed to better support standards. The windows version uses Trident, which is in sore need of a rewrite after over a decade. It was made long before CSS was even conceived.

Windows is not based on unix. In every possible way, it is completely different. The only common traits it shares now is the network layer, and even then thats from BSD. Windows does have a free (used to cost) subsystem layer that adds unix support on top of Windows, and its enterprise quality.

Of course you do, if Mac was everywhere Windows would look good too. It's just that you get to see some new interface that's all. I had it on my PC, it's not that great, and programming for it is a pain in the a**.

Yes, it is easy to learn and use, the dock is very annoying on low resolutions though and i mostly don't like it cause it's Apple. Yeah, discrimination, but the truth is that i stoped liking Apple since i saw their latest add:

YouTube - Mac vs. PC Windows 7 vs. Mac Ad: Broken Promises

Their asswholes. I like some of their products even if they are madly expensive, but i don't like them as a company. Anyway, Mac OS is just a tool to sell their computers, without Mac OS, almost nobody would buy a Mac.

And Linux can have a Mac-like user interface since you can customize it the way you like. Also, i have no reason to go Mac except for Final Cut Studio, that i would use for video cutting, but until then Adobe Premiere and After Effects are just as good.

Windows 7 has better features than Snow Leopard in my opinion (Libraries for example are totally great, and more others...).

You say it's not as fast?
    Mac Mini - 599$

For that money i could buy a PC with a speed that would outrun a Mac.

They lie that they are not viruses for the Mac, well you are more secure on Windows since you have an antivirus than on a Mac. On a Mac you can get a trojan that steals all your data and there is nothing that would tell you what's happening.

In the end, let's see what they did good: The iPhone is a great device (looks good, touch screen is brilliant and the apps for it make worth the money, check out Yelp), Mac's look pretty nice (aluminum... great!), and... well, that's about it.

Ah, and just to answer your question :

If the filesystem uses \ it's Microsoft or IBM (Dos-based) if it uses / it's UNIX.

Well, i like it over iWorks and OpenOffice. The difference is that it's hard to get used to, but it's really good i think. Can't they include OneNote into the package too ?

Re: is mac really based of unix?

I am anti-Windows. Not only because of the viruses, you may argue that Macs have some (less than 100 last time i checked) but they are almost impossible to get and if you do get them they can't just steal your info... Windows is junk if only due to the registry. It is horrible to work in and it is slow in keeping up with other OS's. A lot of the new features in Windows have been in Linux and Mac for years...

Saying Apple is crap because you ran it on Windows is like saying Pepsi is bad because you had coke... I used a Hackintosh for two years before I bought my first MacBook Pro and I will never use Windows again. It was night and day difference, a Hackintosh is no comparison. There are some downsides to Mac, I am the first to admit they suck with customer service, I hate that I can't fix everything myself like you can on a PC. In fact, that is the ONLY thing good about a PC, the ability to build and modify one to your liking. Apple makes everything so you have to bring it in to get it fixed but their so-called "geniuses" are complete morons. They almost broke one of my HD bays for my Mac Pro... they were forcing the drive into the bay instead of looking at what was blocking it.

The only people I hear say Windows is better than Mac are .Net developers.... I hate and refuse to deal with that crappy framework; its not a language. Mac has always had better performance than a PC (not talking about workstations) especially when handling Macromedia or CS suites.

The problem is, its a pissing match. Its like arguing that chocolate is better than vanilla... Everyone has their own flavor. I like Mac, although I am getting more into Linux, I still like the feel of a Mac. Its much lighter than Windows and Windows is too resource heavy. Using a debugger on Windows is painful. Windows 7 is a nice step up in the right direction, although Vista really ruined Windows in my book. It will take them awhile to recover in my eyes. I hate Windows, at least for now. They have a lot to prove to me before I can say they are better than Mac.

As for the mac-mini... that is a p.o.s. Don't waste your time with it. It's not a real Mac and it will only make you hate Mac.

To say you are more secure on Windows than a Mac is just wrong... There are anti-virus for Mac but you really don't need one. Little Snitch is really the only tool you need.

Windows biggest issue is that it has IE, IE is and has always been Windows biggest security hole. I wouldn't go as far to say that Windows has better features than a Mac... that's not true at all.

Apples biggest contribution is pushing the level up a notch. Before the iPhone, our phones were still crappy. If there is one thing Apple does right, its raise the bar. For that reason alone, I like Apple... but at the same time I hate their guts.
The only thing that really makes me mad about Mac is how they act like they created all this new technology but it's been around for years on Linux OS's...
