How to deal with non-paying client?

Recently I developed a website for a client. I took half before I started and presented the website to the client.

I sent an email demanding payment but he didn't respond for about 3 days. I finally checked his website and he had stolen everything I designed. There was no PHP or scripting, just pure design.

Any ideas how to make him pay? How do you prevent this theft? I've thought about sending a jpg screenshot now instead of letting them see the website.

if you still have the original .psd file you have something to stand on because he won't have it.
If he paid you half upfront via paypal you can file a claim for money via paypal i think.

You shouldn't let him see the actual website after you design it. Always take a screenshot (and if on a public server blur out the URL). Then send him the screenshot. Some people will not like this but it protects you.

No seriously though, i normally watermark all images or send the site as a PDF until I have received payment in full

ehh yeah im not sure what you can do, always send them it in jpg and put watermarks on it, thats how i always see website for sale posted as.

Most people will pay once you deliver lawsuit papers. That is, if the cost was worth pursuing (spelling?). Threaten them.

Yes, threaten legal action. Say you've done it before (even if you haven't) and they will most certainly comply. People would rather spend money rather than go to court.

That's true, you could turn violent, hire a hitman, and "make a killing" out of your non-paying client.
