When is a thread closed

Ok..I am not understanding lot of things here..can someone tellme when a thread is closed or dead . I have seen comments about not reviving dead threads ? How does a person know?

By the date perhaps,
Check the last four/Five replies' dates to make sure that the thread is not outdated. If it's what you are talking about.
