    Updates

I am using the slackware 12 how to guide on www dot howtoforge dot com. In the tutorial they guide you through how to get the necessary updates and the process to follow. They also said if i cant find the md5sum code on slackware/getslack in the desired package dont install the update. The thing is, the website they pointed me to, to get the actual update had a lot more updates than the actual slackware site. As a result most of the md5sum codes cannot be verified. Should i install them still considering this should be a trustworthy repository. I am unable to post the link, but i got it through the getslack mirrors

The MD5 Sums just verify the file was downloaded correctly. You download the file, download the MD5 sum and then check to make sure it is downloaded properly. It does not authenticate the source in anyway.

    After updating

What i did after was install all the updates for the year 2007 (with the exception of about 6) since slackware 12.0 was released in 2007. When i launch amarok from k menu it flashes on the screen and appears to be loading in the taskbar, but it never actually opens. I dont want to update to the 2008 list b/c im not sure what will happen. There was one amarok update included in the list of packages.
    Code:
    amarok-1.4.10-i486-1_slack12.0.tgz
I googled it up and read some similar but not exact issues in slack and they mentioned something about mysql. Not sure how that applies, but i think i installed something to that effect.
Is a restart necessary after updating, or just good practice?

That depends on what you are updating. If it is just a service, like MySQL, you can simply restart it.
