I have always use windows on my desktop, back in the days when the only distribution of Linux for the desktop was RedHat and a few others who name I cannot remember, I installed the RedHat version on a PC, I hated it and never gone back to having Linux on my desktop.
I was informed by a friend who is a big Linux enthusiast that there are not many user friendly Linux distribution for the desktop out there.
Which one would you recommend and why?
Ubuntu can be a little ugly, but seems like it's one of the most user friendly distros out there.
i think ubuntu is great.
People of the not-banned type also would say you could give Ubuntu a try. It's the one I'm using, and there's friendly types who will help on the internet. There's also Mandriva, I really enjoyed using that distro, and finally LinuxMint, it's Ubuntu but pretty, and a little more dev oriented.

Any of the Ubuntu variants are pretty easy to use. I've just installed LinuxMint and it is, without a doubt, the easiest distro to use I've ever come across.
This thread was started in march 2008... I guess s/he found a distro by now... For others though, Ubuntu is good for a linux starter. I haven't tried mint. Puppy linux is a small one, but very easy to use.
Hey! Check out my new Toyota keyboaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
sorry to "bumb" again, I see most of the linux users recomending Ubuntu for starters as "the best linux for a general user"
but I think this is a bit wrong, like said in previous posts, Linux Mint is an excellent variant of Ubuntu, it is Ubuntu with extra benefits
it has tons of extra drivers, it has flash and video codecs pre-installed where as in Ubuntu itself you have to installe them yourself, so distributions like Mint are the way to go
