Wine is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop.

Extremely a useful application for linux.
Yup, Wine is a truly amazing little program. Thumbs up for the tutorial![]()
Not really much of a tutorial. I see no steps, pictures or anything. Just a simple paragraph.
Perhaps a tad off-topic, but I have never had any luck at all getting WINE to emulate even notepad.
I've dug through tons of tutorials and how-to's when it comes to setting up WINE but there is always something small that goes wrong or a missing step.
Not saying that WINE is a poor program, it's great that it's out there and unlike Crossover Office it's free, but for reasons unexplained I just can't get it to do anything I need.

There is a little bit of a learning curve. I think I had the same kind of problems at first ...
I think it's strange that you've been having problems in emulating Notepad. Wine is usually ready to run and emulate simple programs just after the installation, without any further configuration, at least that's what I've experienced. I've only been configuring my Wine one time, and that was when I emulated Battlefield 2. Everything else has just worked.
