Connecting to a VPN

I have a laptop with Linux and I can connect perfectly to the internet at home. I can also connect to other WIFI networks. The issue I am having is connecting to the VPN after connecting to the WIFI network so that I can actually use the intranet of my working environment. Please help me if I have to download something in specific or execute some commands from the terminal?

There can be a lot of variables in what you've just stated and we will need more information. What kind of VPN network hardware are you using? I've used Cisco networks before and if configured to do so, they can reject any software that is not the Cisco VPN client.

Well I don't know what hardware they use at work...

And what does the Cisco VPN client has that others don't?

Nothing, it just allows the software to communicate with the hardware. Have you tried searching around for VPN software? I know there are several different ones.
