Samba will do this in Linux. You can edit the samba.conf file to change your settings.

Isn't samba a file sharing server? In Linux Can't you just share a folder just like linux?

Samba is how Linux is able to share folders with Windows networks. It also works between Linux machines.

Thanks. I thought Samba was used ONLY to support sharing of files with Windows...

Does it take a great deal of knowledge in order to make a basic network? Or, are is it something that a motivated novice would be capable of doing?

Yep, you can make it work with SAMBA, the basic networking can be achieved without having facepalm moments. Just enable the network connectivity and update your firewall settings, tweak some more and you're good to go.

If you only want to enable file sharing, I think Samba is enough. I've used it to share files from both Linux and Windows machines. It works fine and not complicated at all.

Using samba will let you share any mounted filesystem (including other network shares.) Hell, you can even share your printer using SAMBA and CUPS. Because it supports local propagation, after you setup a share all you have to do is look for it under (XP) network places, or (Ubuntu) Network on the destination machine.
